Saving the Planet

Posted on

As we slide headlong into another election cycle, everyone’s doomsday scenarios play out across the news and internet.  Depending on who you ask, Obama or Romney’s election spells the end of everything as we know it.

Another report about sunspots, toxins in our food, cancer on the rise and crazy people eating faces.

Bored now.  What else you got?

I can’t help but remember one my favorite comedians, George Carlin and his take on our real impact on this planet.  Make no mistake, we will probably cause our own extinction but the planet is doing just fine.

“The decay and disintegration of this culture is astonishingly amusing if you are emotionally detached from it…

I sincerely believe that if you think there’s a solution, you’re part of the problem.  My motto: Fuck hope!”

–George Carlin

I’m taking up Carlin’s mantle.  He talked about rooting for chaos and disorder because he was a huge fan of entropy (which posits that disorder is more probable than order).  Perhaps that’s why we as a species just can’t get it together.

Misquoting Charles M. Schultz, There are some people I like, it’s Mankind that I can’t stand.

Well, at least we put on a good show.  Shit’s getting crazy and it’s only the beginning.  Our entire social structure is beginning to come apart at the seams.  I think that’s why rich people are behaving like looters do after the power goes out.  Grabbing all they can while they can because they too know it’s all downhill from here.

See you at the Restaurant at the End of the Universe.  We’ll have a drink and watch it all go boom.

Vagina Envy

Posted on

I’m beginning to suspect that all of those uptight male religious zealots and their puppet politicians have a good old fashioned case of Vagina Envy.  They want one of their own but can’t have it so they insist upon trying to control ours.

Perhaps they are angry that they don’t get to bleed once a month.  Or they might want the worry about possibly conceiving a child every time they have intercourse.  They are obviously jealous that they can’t conceive a child without us.

That’s it!  They hate that they need women to procreate and carry on their genes so they are doing everything they can to get a stranglehold on that ability.

Since they can’t do it, they want to tell us how to do it, when to do it and who to do it with.  If they can’t take away our rights, they will do everything in their power to make it difficult for women to exercise our right to prevent a pregnancy.  Make birth control harder to access and more expensive.  Try and shame us as we do what we think is in our best interest.

You may think that sex is bad and wrong or only for procreation and marriage.  I don’t and you don’t get to tell me who to have sex with or when.  Get used to it.  Those days are OVER!!!!

Movie Lovers Unite!

Posted on

A little over a year ago, a couple of friends decided they wanted to watch all of the James Bond films in one giant binge-like marathon.  That weekend, something special and incredibly fun was born.

In addition to watching the films, a camera with a live stream was set up for those who couldn’t attend and another camera took intermittent photos so that a time-lapse video could be created of the events.

Movies are a shared experience.  We spent the whole weekend debating which actor made the best Bond, which movies still held up over time and who’s making the next round of martinis.

We went on to watch and rank all of the Star Trek, Batman and Star Wars films throughout all of last year.

This past weekend, we did the fifth marathon which had a unique twist, we incorporated a theatrical film into our movie watching.

After watching all of the Alien and Predator films (as well as the Alien vs. Predator ones), we went to see Prometheus on the big screen.  Who knows what we’ll come up with next.  Whatever it is, I will surely be there.

If you love movies like we do, you most certainly can appreciate what we as a group have created.  If not, you probably think we’re all crazy.  A successful movie marathon requires dedicated hosts and their crazy friends who are willing to sit and watch movies until their backsides are numb.

We are just those people.

Divided We Fall

Posted on

As I watch this year’s election coverage unfold, I can’t help but fear for our future.  The “United States of America” no longer exists.

We have become a country divided: divided by trivialities and oppositional positions.  We can allow for differences of opinion among friends, find compromises with our loved ones and make room for others not like us in our daily lives.  But politically, we’ve drawn lines in the sand and refuse to meet in the middle.

A house divided against itself cannot stand.  And our divisions are rapidly destroying all of the things that we have held so dear.  Without compromise and concession on both sides, there will be no progress forward.  We will continue to regress until we become a shell of what we once were.

One side longs for what they consider the glory days of America but that was a time when the other side didn’t have it so good and they would not like to return there.  America has been a beacon for opportunity and equality.  It hasn’t always lived up to those ideals but that doesn’t mean we should stop trying.

Land of Opportunity; Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness; All Men are Created Equal and all that jazz.  That is what America means to me.  And when I consider how things should be, I look to see if those things are being expressed.

There is one more principle that we need to consider which I think has always been implied but never expressly stated, and that is a person should be able to do whatever they want as long as they don’t harm or hinder anyone else.  Or better stated, we are all responsible for our own behavior and we are responsible for the impact we have on others.  That’s it.

There will come a time of crisis: it may be imminent or we may have some time, but mark my words it will come.  And when it does, will we rise to the challenge and unite in order to make a better world for all?  Or will we dissolve due to petty and divisive bickering over whether or not my way is better than your way?

This isn’t your country and it isn’t my country.  It’s OUR country.  It’s time to remember that we’re all in this together.  It’s time to start behaving that way and find solutions that benefit us all.
